Slow Website, Lost Customers: Why Page Speed Matters for Small Sites

Slow Website, Lost Customers: Why Page Speed Matters for Small Sites

Picture your next customer. They are not at a desk. They are in a parking lot in Waterford with two bars of signal, phone in hand, looking for someone who does what you do. They tap your site. It starts to load. A spinner. A blank screen. Another second passes.

They are gone, and you will never know they existed. Speed problems do not leave voicemails.

The three-second cliff

The numbers on this are blunt. Google and SOASTA analyzed more than 900,000 mobile pages and found that as load time grows from just 1 second to 3 seconds, the probability of a bounce increases 32%, according to Think with Google's mobile page speed benchmarks.

Two seconds of delay, a third of your visitors more likely to leave. Not because your work is bad or your prices are high. They never got far enough to find out.

This is happening at the moment when local intent is strongest. Per Think with Google data cited by HubSpot, 76% of people who search for something nearby on their smartphone visit a business within 24 hours, and 28% of those searches end in a purchase. The person waiting on your spinner is not idly browsing. They are about to spend money with somebody today. Speed decides whether they ever see your name, because your site is the front door: 76% of consumers look at a business's online presence before visiting in person, per a Visual Objects survey reported by PR Newswire.

Why small business sites get slow

The good news is that slow sites are rarely mysterious. Around Oakland County we see the same five causes over and over:

Giant photos straight off a phone

A modern phone shoots photos at 4 to 8 megabytes each. Upload ten of them raw to your gallery page and you are asking a visitor on cell signal to download more data than a whole music album, just to see your homepage. Photos should be resized and compressed for the web, a step most DIY builds skip.

Page builder bloat

Drag-and-drop builders are flexible because they ship code for everything you might do, whether you did it or not. That flexibility rides along on every visit as scripts and styles the page never uses.

Cheap hosting

Five-dollar hosting puts your site on a crowded server, and you feel it in the first second of every page load, before your content even starts arriving. That first slow second is the one the bounce math punishes hardest.

The plugin pile

Fourteen plugins for sliders, popups, animations, and a snow effect from a 2019 holiday season. Each one adds weight, and each one is another thing that breaks quietly.

Autoplay video

A background video in the header can outweigh everything else on the site combined. On a phone, it is spending your customer's patience on a decoration.

Check your site in two minutes

You do not need a consultant to find out where you stand. Open Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool, type in your address, and look at the mobile score first, because that is how your customers arrive.

Then read it without panic. Do not chase a perfect 100; that is a hobby, not a business goal. Look at two things: how long until content actually appears (Largest Contentful Paint, which Google wants under 2.5 seconds), and whether the page jumps around while loading. If content takes 4+ seconds on mobile, you are losing people every single day, and the report's top suggestions (usually oversized images) tell you exactly why.

Run it on your competitors too. Around here, the bar is often low enough that fixing speed alone puts you ahead.

Fast by default beats fast by rescue

Speed patches (compress this, cache that) help, but they fight the architecture. The durable fix is a site built fast from the start: modern static pages, images sized for the web automatically, no plugin pile, decent hosting. That is how we build every site in our website and online presence service, and you can test any site in our portfolio with PageSpeed yourself; we are happy to have our work graded by the same tool we just handed you.

Speed is not a premium feature we charge extra for. It is the default, included in fixed monthly pricing along with hosting and updates, because a slow site fails at the only moment that matters: the parking lot, the two bars of signal, the customer deciding right now.

Find out what your speed is costing you

Run the two-minute test on your site today. If the mobile numbers make you wince, get in touch for a free assessment and we will tell you honestly whether your site needs a tune-up or a rebuild, and what either one looks like at a flat monthly price.
