How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost in Michigan?

How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost in Michigan?

Ask five web designers what a website costs and you will get five conversations, zero numbers. Here is the number first, then an honest look at what moves it.

Industry pricing guides from ManyPixels and GruffyGoat put a professionally built small business website at roughly $2,000 to $8,000 up front. Within that, freelancers typically charge about $1,500 to $8,000 and boutique agencies run $6,000 to $35,000 or more. Ongoing costs for domain, hosting, and maintenance commonly land between $150 and $500 per month.

Michigan does not get a discount or a markup on any of this. Quoting projects around Oakland County, we see local pricing land inside those same national ranges. What actually changes your number is what you ask for, so let's break that down.

What moves the price

Pages and content. A five page site costs less than a twenty page site, but the bigger swing is who writes the words. If the designer has to interview you, draft every service page, and revise it all twice, the quote climbs fast. Show up with clear copy, or a willingness to write it, and you save real money.

Features. A brochure site is the floor. Online booking, quote forms with photo uploads, customer logins, and e-commerce each add build and testing time. E-commerce is the biggest jump of all, because products, payments, tax, and shipping rules are a project of their own. Be honest about which features you will use in year one and skip the rest.

Design. A lightly customized template keeps you near the low end of the range. Fully custom design with multiple revision rounds is where agency pricing comes from. Most local businesses need the former and get sold the latter.

Photography. Real photos of your crew, your shop, and your finished work do more for a site than any design flourish. If you have none, budget for a shoot, or plan to take good phone photos on real jobs. We would take honest phone photos over polished stock every time.

The ongoing costs nobody puts in the quote

The build price is not the price. Hosting, domain renewal, security updates, backups, and the inevitable "can you change our hours" edits continue for the life of the site, and the same pricing guides put those run costs at $150 to $500 per month. Do the three-year math before you sign anything: a $2,000 build carrying even $150 a month of upkeep is a $7,400 decision over three years. That number rarely appears on a proposal.

The $0 website that costs 40 hours

DIY builders are genuinely free or close to it, and for some businesses they are the right call. Just price your own time honestly. If the build eats 40 hours of your evenings and your working hour is worth $75 on a job, that free website cost you $3,000, plus the subscription, plus every future hour of fiddling when something breaks the night before a busy week.

DIY makes sense when the business is brand new, you are still testing whether the idea is real, and you have more time than money. It stops making sense the day your time earns more on the job than it does inside a page editor.

Why the cheap-looking option is not neutral

Whatever you spend, remember what the site is for. In a survey by Visual Objects, 76% of consumers said they look at a business's online presence before visiting it in person. Design is part of how they judge what they find: Stanford's Web Credibility Research found nearly half of consumers (46.1%) assessed a site's credibility partly on its visual design, meaning the layout, typography, and colors. A site that looks abandoned quietly votes against you before anyone calls.

That is the real risk of buying purely on price. The $500 site that looks like a $500 site does not save you $1,500. It costs you the callers who judged the book by its cover.

A different way to pay for it

There is a third model between the $5,000 project and the DIY weekend: fixed monthly pricing. Ours starts at $100 per month with no build fee, and that number includes the build, hosting, updates, and content changes. The ongoing costs are not a surprise line item, they are the whole model. See exactly what is included on our pricing page, and how we approach affordable website design in Oakland County specifically.

If you want to judge the work instead of the words, our portfolio shows real sites we have built for local businesses, not mockups.

Ranges from a blog post, ours included, are still just ranges. If you are pricing a website for your business, request a free assessment and we will scope your site plainly: what you need, what you can safely skip, and what it costs month to month with nothing hidden.
