Winning Local Search · Part 4 of 5
The Clarkston Small Business Guide to Winning Local Search

We run this business from Clarkston, so nothing here is theory. When somebody two miles from your shop pulls out a phone and searches for what you sell, one of two things happens: they find you, or they find your competitor. This guide is about making the first outcome the normal one, with a 90-day plan you can actually run while operating a business.
The stakes are bigger than most owners assume. Google has said that 46% of searches have local intent, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable. Nearly half of everything typed into the world's biggest search engine is someone looking for something nearby.
How local search actually plays out here
For a Clarkston or Oakland County business, local search has three surfaces, and they do different jobs.
The map pack handles the "near me" moments: someone needs a machine shop, a pawn counter, a gunsmith, today. These searchers are not browsing. According to Think with Google data cited by HubSpot, 76% of people who search for something nearby on their smartphone visit a business within 24 hours, and 28% of those searches end in a purchase. The map pack is where the most urgent money in your market gets decided.
Organic results handle the research moments: "how much does a deck cost," "what is an inherited coin collection worth." These searchers are earlier in the decision, and the business that answers their question earns first position in their memory.
Reviews are the tiebreaker on both surfaces. When the map shows three shops with similar services and similar distance, strangers' words decide. BrightLocal's 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey found 92% of consumers read reviews before a first visit to a local business, and only 4% say they never read them. Your next customer has almost certainly read about you before you knew they existed.
Win all three and you have something no ad budget buys: a steady stream of nearby customers who arrive already half-convinced. Here is the 90-day version.
Month 1: Complete your Google Business Profile and start the review habit
Everything begins with your Google Business Profile, because it feeds the map pack. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every section: exact business name, primary category, service areas, hours, services, and real photos of real work. We published a full walkthrough in our Google Business Profile setup guide for Oakland County businesses, so this month has no guesswork in it.
Completeness is not busywork. Google's own data, compiled by Search Endurance, shows customers are 2.7x more likely to consider a business reputable when its profile is complete, 70% more likely to visit, and 50% more likely to consider purchasing.
The second half of month 1 is starting the review habit: ask at the moment of thanks, when the customer is happiest, and reply to every review you get, including the rough ones. Ten minutes a week, forever. It compounds.
Month 2: Fix the website fundamentals
The map pack gets the click; your website has to keep it. Month 2 is about the fundamentals: the site loads fast on a phone, every service you offer has its own page written the way customers search for it, and there is a page that plants your flag in your town. Our own Clarkston service area page shows the pattern: name the place, name the work, show the proof, make the next step obvious.
If you want the reasoning behind each of these, we unpacked the plain-English ranking factors (proximity, relevance, prominence) in our local SEO basics post. The short version: Google decides prominence partly from your website, so a thin site puts a ceiling on your map results too.
Month 3: Earn local links and start publishing
Month 3 is prominence work, and in a town like ours it looks a lot like being a good neighbor. Join the chamber and make sure your listing links to your site. Sponsor a team or an event that posts its sponsors. Ask suppliers and partners you already work with to list you. Each of those links is a small, durable signal that your business is real and rooted here.
Then start a publishing habit you can sustain: one genuinely useful page or post a month, answering a question your customers actually ask. Not for an algorithm. For the person researching at 9pm who is deciding who to call tomorrow.
What 90 days actually buys you
Honesty matters here: local search is a compounding game, not a fireworks show. Rankings move over months, and the reviews and links you earn this fall will still be working for you in two years. What the 90-day plan really buys is position, because most of your competitors will never finish month 1. Doing the boring fundamentals completely is, itself, the competitive advantage.
